An Invitation

April 1, 2011 by Carl McDonald

A Journey Forward

with Carl and Sallie McDonald

This will be a forward journey, with an obtainable destination, but far away from our starting place.  Not unlike our lives.

My sister Sallie and I will be riding bicycles from Florida to Oregon in the summer of 2011.   We will ride in the memory of warmer summers.

Each day will be dedicated to those whose lives are affected by the preventable crime of drunk driving.  Each pedal stroke, each turn of the tire, will be from two who carry a very personal loss of our own.

Please join us as we travel the back roads of America.  We begin April 25.

Please bring me along in your hearts, as I carry your spirits within me. Be safe, and stay on the side of love.

Gosh, Carl – that wonderful book-surprise arrived today – it was on the top of my book wish-list…heard this one interviewed on NPR and was transfixed. Thank you, thank you – this will keep me in good company whilst my sibs are pedaling, pedaling, pedaling (etc.) even in their dreams.

Be, be be safe out there, and laugh a LOT. Love you both, Susie

Pictures of Florida look fantastic — blue skies and flat.
Looks like y’all are off to a great start.

I want to thank you for doing what you are doing…. My brother was killed in february of 2002 by an 18 year old drunk driver. He would have been 25 years old in April… 2 months shy… Thank you for making the stand against DD!!! 🙂

Return safely from your journey, as so many of us have lost our loved one on theirs’. I lost my daughter, Lysa Ayn, on her journey to us, her parents in Jacksonville, as she entered the state of Fl, on July 27, 2002. Thank you for doing this and the dedication to this needless loss of life.

May the wind be at your back throughout this courageous journey you have undertaken. Thank you for doing something amazing to bring attention to the drunk driving problem. An underage drunk driver killed my husband, 19 year old son, and two adult stepsons on August 1, 2010. Senseless losses as are all drunk driving deaths.

Good luck from the Sunshine State!

I think it is a wonderful thing that you guys are doing.myson is among those that this ride is dedicated to ,he was killed in october ,2007 he was a passenger in a car with a boy we tryed to keep him from, until you have gone through something like this you will never have the full effect of what drinking and driving means.but because of people like us that can stand up be strong and try to help out with the fight against this problem hopefully one day this will all come to an end.Again i applaud your courage and strenghth to be able to do this ,I will follow your story my thoughts and prayer’s will be with you both!!”GOD BLESS YOU AND BE SAFE”……..

May you have a safe journey…! Thank you for doing what you are doing. I lost my brother Jesse 9 years ago at the age of 19 at the hands of a drunk driver. Not a day goes by in which I do not think and miss him…the fact that you both are taking your time to honor the many lives afftected by drunk driving really means alot to me. May God bless you and keep you safe in your ride! 🙂

We are so overwhelmed by your efforts to raise awareness of MADD’s mission. You and your sister are inspirational MADD ambassadors. We are thrilled that your journey across America will introduce Carlie’s story and the stories of other victims to many different communities. Be safe on your travels~

Carl, great pictures of flowers. Now how about a food picture?
Sounds like you are dry so far. That’s a good thing.
